The Ohio State Roller Hockey Club was founded in 1998 and officially joined the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL) in 1999. At the time, the MCRHL was a part of the Collegiate Roller
Hockey League (CRHL), the national governing body of collegiate roller hockey. In 2003, disagreements
led to 5 of the regional organizations in the CRHL breaking away and forming the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA). In September of that year, the MCRHL followed, and so did Ohio State.
From 1999-2014, the Ohio State Roller Hockey Club competed in the MCRHL and NCRHA at the division 1
level, while also fielding a division 3 team when resources allowed. In 2015, the club dropped to
the division 2 level to stay competitive with the available resources, and in 2018 dropped again
to division 3 following a competitive restructuring. In these years, the club struggled as both of
the local roller hockey rinks were shut down, leaving them nowhere to practice and leading to a lack
of membership. This dip, however, changed in the following years, as in 2018 a new rink was put up
near campus, and in 2019 new club president and future coach Thomas Marriner helped recruit 16 new
members and restructured the club’s organization for more successful years to come. This resurgence
helped spark Ohio State’s back-to-back championship seasons in 2021 and 2022. In the 2020-2021 season,
the Ohio State Roller Hockey Club knocked off SUNY Cortland 6-4 in the division 3 national championship,
before moving up to division 2 and defeating UMASS 5-4 in the national championship the following year.
Recently, Heatwave Arena opened up in Plain City, Ohio, providing the club with an indoor roller hockey
rink to practice and compete at. In the 2025-2026 season, the club’s second team beat Michigan State to
win the MCRHL AA Division Conference Championship. Currently, the club still competes in the NCRHA as a
part of the MCRHL in both the D2 level as well as the AA level, and looks to make a run at another national
championship.
